Development of good teaching characteristics
In LTS 501 The Study of Learning and Teaching I focused on developping my technique of asking questions. In LTS 502 The Teaching and Learning of Methods & Media I have selected Empathy and Encouraging risk-taking from the Swinburne Criteria, as characteristics I would like to improve on and develop. My current teaching practice is as a guest teacher in information literacy classes held in the Wantirna Library. During Semester 2 2007, I will be conducting a series of classes, with Leanne Meere, a colleague from the Croydon Library, for the staff of the Wantirna and Croydon libraries. It is through this series of classes, that will create the opportunity for some continuity of teaching that I hope to improve on these characteristics.
Within Empathy I wish to focus on
” – Reveals understanding of how learners learn the subject.
- Addresses difficulties that may be encountered in the content.
- Accommodates differing learning styles and needs.
- Recognises individual and cultural differences.” Swinburne Criteria [of Good Teaching]

Within Encouraging risk-taking I wish to focus on
“-Challenges learners’ beliefs and ideas
- Creates problems to be solved
- Provides open ended learning experiences” Swinburne Criteria [of Good Teaching]
