Engagement with Gen NET [20070729]
I attended an interesting session at the State Library of Victoria on 26 July. It was called Millenials – How they communicate. My distinct impression that millenials are logged onto the net all day, everyday. I have deliberately made my home an internet free space, working online all day, it is a relief to return home to a quiet haven. If my daily life involves receiving the majority of my information via printed newspapers and radio, then I have a long way to before I can engage with the Net Generation.
I use email, txt, hand written letters and the telephone to communicate. I have no desire to exhibit my soul on MySpace or YouTube or FaceBook but I will have to make those leaps and connections. Keeping a blog will be the 1st step.
The Digiatal Household and the Connection Compulsion, [20070803], Life Matters, ABC Radio National, Friday Talkback
This was a fascinating broadcast, with presenter Richard Aedy and guests, Paul Williams, Perth based educator, IT consultant & parent and Jonathan Nicholas, Director of Programs at the Inspire Foundation http://www.inspire.org.au/
The crux of the discussion was about young people’s need to stay connected the their friends and peers. The tools they are using are txt via mobile phones, instant messaging and ichat via the internet and social networking sites such as FaceBook, MySpace and YouTube.
Parents feel anxious about their children and teenager talking with unknown people through these technologies. Some parents attempt to restrict their offspring access using time and withholding the modem. The guests put forward the view that offspring who feel understood by their parents would engage less in risk taking behavior using these media. I was suggested that the sharing of one meal per day with the television and computers off, would allow space for families to feel connected with each other.
I wonder how young people with limited financial resources manage to stay connected? although public libraries have free internet access, they are not open at the peak times for msn chat.
60sox project [20070808]
At the Swinburne TAFE Professional Development Day Yesterday, at the TAFE Professional Development Day, I attended a session presented by Justin Brow (Institute of Creative Industries and Innovation @ QUT). His entry on the QUT website states “His current goal is to establish a nationwide network to encourage innovation and enterprise among emergent digital content creators, establish career development pathways in the Creative Industries, and to establish an internationally competitive edge for Australia’s Digital Content industry practitioners.” [http://www.creativeindustries.qut.edu.au/about_us/staff-profile/staffDetail.jsp?id=00564144 20070808]
The 60sox project http://60sox.org.au/Main.aspx allows emerging creators in the categories animation, design, film & video, music & audio, photography, visual art and writing to post e-folios on the site. Peer review and review by volunteer commercial practitioners is available. In the future a combination of 60 real and exemplar briefs will be offered.
The site is well worth watching.
